John Lennon Vedic Astrology Chart
Reveals Virgo Spiritual Lesson
John Lennon: born 9/10/1940: approx. 6;40 a.m. – Liverpool, England. (There is some disagreement about birth time, but many agree that the Virgo Ascendant is correct.) To look fully at the spiritual self it is good to also fully review the sub-charts, including the Navamsha (D-9) and the D-12. However, for instructive purposes, I’ve briefly analyzed the Ascendant Birth Chart – called the Janma Kundali.
The Virgo personality is seeking perfection and order in life.
But, can perfection be found in the phenomenal world?
Before answering this question, and analyzing the spiritual quality of any individual, it is important to understand the personality first…
(Quotes used below are from John Lennon’s writings or lyrics)
“When I cannot sing my heart, I can only speak my mind.”
Note John Lennon’s first house with Sun, Mars and Rahu (three malefics) together in Virgo the perfectionist, making for an aggressively powerful intellect, with a heated, out-of-the-box personality. Virgos naturally want to know, and with Sun (ego) and Mars (action, energy and violence) together with trouble-maker cosmic snake Rahu, would make John want to know NOW. This is not a patient personality or someone who could step back easily from an argument or speaking his mind: this is a compelling even addictive personality – a debater, an edgy raconteur, with intensely controversial opinions. Known for provoking others with his sarcastic comments and critical attitude, this planetary combination could simultaneously fascinate, attract obsessive characters, and make powerful and dangerous enemies.
“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
Ascendant Lord Mercury in the 2nd house in sign 7, aspected by retrograde Jupiter and Saturn (debilitated) in Aries from the 8th at the same degree – made for an intensely skilled and professional artistic type, full of fire and energy; a rather judgmental character, with lots of extreme ups and downs in communications, finances and frustration or resentments involving repetition or repeating – or anything that blocked his desires. Certainly this was confirmed in his choice of a musical, artistic, and lyrical career, his relationship with the Beatles and communications with others. And believe it or not, before his extreme wealth and fame, John was also once so broke he had to sell his cherished record collection to friends.
“Everybody seems to think I’m lazy I don’t mind, I think they’re crazy. Running everywhere at such a speed till they find there’s no need.”
Saturn debilitated and retrograde with Jupiter at the same degree aspecting his Ascendant Mercury closely from the 8th gave intellectual brilliance combined with a sometimes lazy, other times task master communication style – with a demanding, perfectionist streak. According to band members John exemplified extremes. Extremely creative but also exceptionally difficult to work with, he was said to overflow with genius-like creativity on one day and sleep too much and be lazier than other Beatle members on others.
“Being honest may not get you a lot of friends but it will always get you the right ones”
John was known for saying what he felt and equally known to judge others quite harshly and rather mercilessly. You either loved or hated him, and sometimes the public and his friends did both. From what we read in the press, there were intense ongoing disagreements about repetitious playing of the Beatles’ most popular songs to screaming fans at concerts. There were arguments about which songs should be on albums, John’s belittlement of the musical efforts of other band members and insistence that Yoko Ono be accepted as an equal participant in their recording sessions.
In looking at John’s Janma Kundali, I’d have to say his behavioral patterns towards band members and others is the Mars, Sun and Rahu combination in the first house coming forward in full fury. Wanting to push buttons, aggravating others, saying whatever was necessary to promote his own agenda was coming from a deep seated place of personal fear and anxiety. Drug usage would have greatly exacerbated these mental tendencies. Feeling uncertain and out of control made Lennon angry, and pushed John the peace-loving towards John the bully.
“I am a violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence.”
John Lennon’s chart shows a man constantly at war with himself and others. With fiery malefic Sun and Mars in his first house, it’s no wonder that he felt explosive inside. Rahu conjoining would only add to the volatility and intensity, encouraging his violent temper and fits of rage which he’d take out on those closest to him. Two retrograde planets Saturn and Jupiter, are at also at war with each other by being less than one degree apart and placed in the 8th house of difficult and challenging transformations. This combination closely aspects Mercury the planet of communications and lord of his chart in the 2nd house. Because of this series of planetary combinations, particularly when feeling trapped or restricted; John would lash out.
Events in his life would also start one way and end up another. The band experience started off exceptionally well, but ended in a very public and nasty break-up 10 years after they formed. John was at one time very devoted to his meditation guru, then publicly criticized and insulted him – later regretting his actions. He ignored or berated his first son Julian, and lavished affection and attention on Sean, his second son with Yoko. His relationship with both wives (Cynthia his first wife, and Yoko Ono, his second) ran hot and cold. He was publicly unpleasant and at times privately abusive to both, (which he regretted later) and the relationships started off one way and ended (or got extended) in another.
“Make love not war.”
John’s spiritual nature shows up in several ways in his chart. The Sun, lord of his 12th house (enlightenment and moksha) is in the first – showing interest in spirituality. However, the 12th lord is with 2 malefics Mars and Rahu, showing a “long and winding road” to the path of enlightenment as Mars and Rahu both tend to be crooked or not straight in their path. His 9th lord (higher learning and spiritual teachers) yoga karaka planet (luck bestowing planet) Venus, is placed the 12th house indicating idealism and interest in spirituality. However, Venus is aspected by an afflicted retrograde Jupiter from the 8th house showing mixed blessings to progress on his spiritual path – some deep and transforming progress and some break, change of direction, or challenge along the way.
His moon (the mind and how we see the world) is in the 5th house of intellect, art, creativity and poorvapunya (past life credit) in Uttarashad Nakshatra – the mongoose – showing a very creative, loner mentality, capable of deep thought and desire to have final victory. The moon is firstly afflicted by retrograde Saturn, showing his desire for happiness through his artistic expression was thwarted by bouts of depression and feelings of resistance or deep distrust within. Moon’s affliction by Rahu shows an insatiably passionate, moody mind, constantly seeking romance and over-dependency on a lover. The combined Saturn/Rahu affliction to the moon in the 5th house can give breaks in relationships, challenges with children, and can also create great pressures on mental stability.
Venus is in Magha (the throne room – owned by Ketu). Venus (the teacher of the rakshasas) in the 12th in a Ketu nakshatra longs to disconnect and dive into abstraction, imagination and the transcendental – but can experience disappointments as well, as the 12th house is a house of loss as well as moksha. A great interest in dream state, films, ashrams, travel to foreign lands, people and enlightenment is present here. John slept a lot, was photographed extensively – travelled world-wide, and did experience an extended stay at an ashram in India, enjoying deep meditation experiences. However, the stay was interrupted when John heard a nasty rumor and jumped to an incorrect conclusion that his spiritual teacher wasn’t pure. He passed the rumor on, insulted his teacher, and encouraged the Beatles to leave the ashram. Later on, the rumor was found to be untrue, and John regretted his unkind words and behavior.
The 12th house in Vedic Astrology is also the house of sex and bed pleasures. With Venus, a sensual planet here, aspected by Jupiter – planet of expansion – there also could have been a great many affairs over the years looking for a divine or unbounded connection through sex, drugs, and rock and roll. It is said that he finally found the deep connection (some say over-dependency) he was looking for with the artistically creative, quirky, and iconoclastic Yoko Ono – with whom he had a very public “love-in”.
“Part of me suspects that I’m a loser, and the other part of me thinks I’m God Almighty.”
The two retrograde planets (Jupiter in Aries with debilitated Saturn) in the 8th, at the same degree reveal why he may consistently experience swings and contrasts. The extreme expansion from Jupiter on one hand promoting the feeling of God Almighty along with a contracting, non-trusting, belligerent, blocked side of the personality with debilitated Saturn, could create a feeling of being a loser. John’s first house Lord, Mercury, is placed in the second house and closely aspected by this difficult combination – making his communication style with others reflect his highly contrasting over-confidence and uncertainty. Jupiter and Saturn at the same degree also aspect his Venus (lord of the 9th and 2nd) in the 12th house (house of moksha and enlightenment) from the truth and justice-seeking Bharani nakshatra. One moment he was an active warrior for truth and justice inciting others to break free from societal constraints and the next he wanted people to leave him alone, and not expect him to fix their problems.
“My defenses were so great. The cocky rock and roll hero who knows all the answers was actually a terrified guy who didn’t know how to cry. Simple.”
His spiritual journey to enlightenment must have been a compelling, complicated and challenging force in his life. Combined with an intense desire to break free from societal restrictions and regulations this chart shows a powerful motivation to experience truth and transcend the banal. John’s judgmental, critical attitude perhaps covered up an extremely idealistic personality who was repeatedly disappointed by what he perceived as superficiality and lack of perfection in others and in himself. Feeling blocked and restricted in his ultimate goal of complete spiritual freedom, divine love, and desire to know the deeper truths, he may have become a unknowing practitioner of Neti philosophy “not this” “not this” – trying to awaken the spiritual reality through elimination and rejection.
The spiritual lesson of Virgo personalities
This continuous state of frustration and disappointment in what he observed was lacking in others, himself, and in the world could also lead to more than one crisis of faith for Lennon. Ultimately, the spiritual lesson for John Lennon and the Virgo personality is to see the futility of seeking perfectionism and perfect order in the phenomenal (relative) world and in others. Seeking outward perfection and trying to create ultimate order through the intellect leads only to frustration because nothing in the (outer) material world is constant or everlasting – everything changes. The only thing certain about the relative world is change itself.
Instead of trying to impose exacting standards on a shifting world, the Virgo personality will find that by gradually turning inward and transcending their powerful intellects, they will find relief. Over time, with regular practice of meditation they realize that the answers to all their questions, concerns, and desire for orderliness and perfection are found deep within – in absolute pure consciousness. Eventually the pain and frustration of the doubting, critical, negative, or negating intellect is released and washed away – until finally freedom and lasting inner peace are gained.
Across the Universe – John Lennon
“Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind,
Possessing and caressing me.
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
They call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Sounds of laughter shades of love are
Ringing through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a
Million suns, and calls me on and on
Across the universe.
Chorus: Jai guru deva om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us. And the world will live as one.” John Lennon
